Place description
The Temple of the Evangelical Church The Light of the World is an impressive architectural work that is not only a place of worship, but also an urban icon of great relevance in the city. Opened in 1982, this temple is the highest and largest liturgical building in the Mexican Republic, with a capacity to house 12,000 parishioners. The construction was led by the architect Leopoldo Fernández Font, and the community of believers of The Light of the World contributed with the labour force. The structure of the temple is innovative, composed of steel that forms a membrane of triangles as an intramide, while the extramide is based on parabolic surfaces that support the temple decks. These covers form a series of staggered terraces that remember a zigurat, creating a unique and symbolic appearance. The temple plant is ovoid, with one of its focal points placing the altar, in perfect alignment with the ash opening of the structure, allowing natural light to illuminate the central space.
