Founders Square

This monumental relief is located at the back of the Degollado Theatre, right at the point where Guadalajara was founded, marking the visual closure of the Plaza de los Fundadores. It was made in 1982 by the capatío sculptor Rafael Zamarripa, at the request of then governor Flavio Romero de Velasco. The work covers 80 square meters and visually narrates the history of the city's foundation. Zamarripa completed the work in only six months, when he even travelled to Spain to investigate the dress of the time and to ensure the historical accuracy of his representation. This relief is not only a key piece of public art in Guadalajara, but also a reminder of the origin and evolution of the city, which is now part of the visual and historical heritage of the center of the city.
