Mariachi Square

Plaza de los Mariachis was once the endpoint of the San Juan de Dios bridge. The alleyway was formed in the second half of the 19th century when public land was gradually reclaimed to create the current triangular plot, where the existing buildings were constructed following eclectic architectural styles. From the beginning, the ground floors were used for commercial purposes, while the upper floors served as residential spaces. Its condition as a city entrance and a hub for inns, muleteers, musicians, cantinas, and shops shaped its identity over time. The constant presence of mariachi music in the area’s soundscape led to it being popularly known, since the mid-20th century, as Mariachi Square.
