Nine Corners Square

Plaza de las Nueve Esquinas is an iconic space in Guadalajara, rich in history and local tradition. Its name comes from the unusual layout of the plaza, which creates nine distinct corners. In earlier times, this small square became an important commercial hub, hosting a series of small shops with colorful names such as La Esperanza, La Balanza, La Chanza, La Labranza, La Danza, La Fianza, La Venganza, La Semblanza, and Sancho Panza. These establishments served as meeting points for merchants and local residents. The plaza was also a key arrival point for muleteers coming from nearby towns around Guadalajara. As transportation systems developed, it later became the terminal for bus lines arriving from the south, strengthening its role as a major commercial node. It became especially known for the sale of pitayas, a traditional fruit of the region, reinforcing its cultural and economic importance in the city’s daily life.
