Parish of San Juan Bautista de Mexicaltzingo

The construction of the temple dedicated to Saint John the Baptist began on 22 April 1803 and was completed in July 1808. This project not only reflected a deep devotion to the Lord of Penance, but also the community effort to build a space of worship that would accompany the faith of the inhabitants of the region. The first priest of the temple was Don Juan Lucas Robles, and the godfather of the act was Don Fernando Abascal and Souza. In 1871, the temple was elevated to the parish category by Archbishop Pedro Loza and Pardavé, with Don Luis Tadeo Nuño and Villavicencia as his first parish priest. Before the construction of this temple, in the same place was a small chapel raised by the Franciscan friars in the 16th century, in an area where Mexican Indians had settled, brought by the Spaniards. In 1650, the village of Mexicaltzingo, which had been an autonomous community, ceased to have its own town hall to become one of the districts of Guadalajara.
