Musa (Museum of the Arts)

The building that currently houses the General University Council (CGU) and the Museum of the Arts (MUSA) of the University of Guadalajara has great architectural and artistic value. His history began during the Mexican Revolution, when Governor Manuel M. Diéguez, within a social reform program, declared education a matter of public interest. In this context, on 20 September 1914, he laid the first stone for the construction of two primary schools, one against the other. The inaugural speech was made by Enrique Díaz de León, who years later would be appointed the first Rector of the University of Guadalajara. The construction was led by the engineer Alfredo Navarro Branca, and later, with the idea of transforming it into the Legislative Palace, the building was modified by the architects Aurelio Aceves and Rafael Urzúa. In 1936, the building obtained one of its great artistic riches with the intervention of the muralist José Clemente Orozco, from Jalisco. Orozco painted two important murals: The Creator and Rebel Man on the dome and The People and Their False Leaders on the stand. These murals are one of the three works that the artist left in Guadalajara.
