Monument to Fray Antonio Alcalde

The Monument to Fray Antonio Alcalde is located in the garden in front of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in the heart of Guadalajara. This public space, formerly known as “Hidalgo Garden,” was named after a sculpture of Miguel Hidalgo that once stood there. The statue depicted the Father of the Nation holding a banner bearing the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a symbol that united religious faith and the independence movement. However, the figure of Hidalgo was removed after suffering severe damage caused by vandalism, leaving the site without a central feature for some time. Subsequently, as part of an effort to redefine the space and pay tribute to one of the most significant figures in the city’s history, a monumental sculpture dedicated to Fray Antonio Alcalde was installed at the center of the garden.
