Statue of Jorge Matute Remus

The engineer Jorge Matute Remus, highlighted for his role in the 20th century, was in charge of coordinating the transfer of the Mexican telephone building to allow the expansion of Juárez Avenue, without interrupting communications in Guadalajara. He was also the thirty-third Rector of the University of Guadalajara between 1949 and 1953. In its project, the building was moved 12 meters and slightly rotated, while the operators continued to work. In honor of his legacy, a sculpture was erected in his memory on the same avenue, which was developed in April 2002, two months before his death at the age of 90. The work shows the engineer standing, with a hand on the wall of the building, as if he was pushing it, wearing his characteristic outfit with guayabera, loose pants and large lenses, symbolizing his contribution to the progress of the city.
